International Aluminium Institute Partners World Climate Foundation and International Chamber of Commerce for COP27  

The International Aluminium Institute (IAI), the only body representing the global primary aluminium industry, has announced collaborations with the World Climate Foundation (WCF) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) for the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27). The United Nations conference, to be hosted in Sharm-El Sheikh on November 6-18, 2022, provides a platform for world leaders, businesses, and citizens to come together to discuss their role in mitigating the climate crisis. 

The IAI’s partnership with WCF and ICC is in line with IAI’s commitment to supporting sustainable aluminium production and demonstrating aluminium’s role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through its use in products and solutions. 

Last year, the IAI modelled a 1.5 Degree Scenario to guide its members’ efforts to meet global climate goals. The modelling is broadly aligned with the IEA’s Net-Zero by 2050 scenario, combined with the IAI’s material flow analysis and future demand scenarios. This scenario is the most ambitious decarbonisation approach and complements existing work. 

The aluminium industry has a pivotal role in meeting global decarbonisation goals. This is why the global industry’s contribution to the upcoming climate conference in Egypt is crucial.   

Speaking on the partnership, Miles Prosser, IAI Secretary General said,

“We are thrilled to be a Principal Partner of the World Climate Summit 2022 and a partner to the International Chamber of Commerce for the upcoming global climate conference – COP27. The IAI is committed to working collaboratively to understand and better articulate credible ways to achieve global climate goals for the industry and so we’re proud of this collaboration and hope that through dialogue, policy discussions and formalised partnerships such as this, we can all address the climate challenge. This challenge is a significant one for us, but I see the commitment throughout the industry to develop solutions that will reduce the carbon intensity of our primary metal.”
