Global Advocacy Plan for Circularity of Aluminium Beverage Containers

The vision of the Global Beverage Can Circularity Alliance (GBCCA) is to achieve full global circularity of aluminium beverage cans by 2050, in alignment with the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero 2050 scenario. To realize this vision, we’ll need to increase global recycling rates for aluminium beverage cans to at least 80% by 2030 and approach 100% by 2050, with a focus on closed-loop (can-to-can) recycling.

In support of the GBCCA’s vision and mission, Roland Berger developed a Global Advocacy Plan for Circularity of Aluminium Beverage Containers, along with three specific business cases for Vietnam, Florida, and the UAE, between July and September 2024.

The plan outlines five key actions that should be implemented globally to boost recycling rates and promote can-to-can recycling. These include: setting ambitious targets, raising awareness and education, enhancing collection and sorting through mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), and separate source collection, ensuring adequate recycling infrastructure for cans, and advocating for policies that minimize waste disposal through landfilling and incineration. The approach and expected recycling outcomes will vary by country, depending on the development of their waste management systems.
